Dehydrated?

Dehydrated? There’s a wrong way to drink water.

If you’re like most people I’ve spoken to, you wait to drink water until you feel thirsty. Then you chug a bottle of water, make that AHHHH noise, and then call it a day.

This doesn’t work to rehydrate you. Why?! Because you’re going to pee it back out in a hot minute.

When you drink water quickly, your body has to absorb it quickly. That’s a lot of volume to add to your circulatory system all at one time. Your body registers that as a surplus and kicks your kidneys into high gear to filter out a good amount of the volume. Cue the bathroom trips.

When you drink water slowly, your body has the chance to absorb it and incorporate it into your blood stream gradually. Then it just becomes part of your blood. Your kidneys filter your blood and remove the waste. THEN cue the bathroom trip.

It’s two different processes. One is getting rid of VOLUME because it feels overloaded. The other is getting rid of WASTE products your body has collected. This second purpose is the whole reason we drink water.

Try this instead: if you’re watching TV, each time there is an ad, take a drink of water. If that doesn’t work for you, try setting a timer for 20 minutes and when it goes off, take a drink of water.

“But I don’t like how water tastes.” Cool, I don’t either. I, personally, love to use water flavoring drops. The Equate brand Guava flavor from Walmart is my absolute favorite. Highly recommend. (I didn’t get paid to say that or anything, I just really enjoy it.) But ESPECIALLY if you don’t enjoy drinking water, we want to make sure you get the most benefit out of the water you do drink.

Cheers!
