Emotional Wellness

Emotions are hard.

No one enjoys feeling negative emotions. We have this belief that we are supposed to feel happy all the time. If we aren’t feeling happy, something must be wrong. Truth is, emotions are indicators. They’re just signals from your biology - like a notification pop up on your phone. It’s trying to grab your attention.

Encountering negative situations can trigger those feelings of “something is wrong.” This is an appropriate response. When you encounter injustice, tragedy, corruption, abuse, or death, it should feel like something is wrong.

If you’d like to have fewer of those feelings in your life, a simple step you could take would be to detox your social media accounts. Before I got brave enough to detox across the board, I just picked one platform and kicked off everything that didn’t give me an automatic happy feeling. I deleted most of the connections, news sources, and social issues off of one page. I filled it up with dog memes and beautiful art. When I needed a brain break, I had a detoxed space that was safe for my mind to rest for a moment. It felt amazing.

Caring is good. Drowning in it is not. Take care of yourselves.
